High Commissioner Blog

As Canada’s High Commissioner to Mozambique and on behalf of all my colleagues working at this diplomatic representation, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to The Canada Mozambique Exchange. I hope the site will help you find information on the various activities happening in between Mozambique and Canada.

Since Mozambique’s independence, Canada’s relationship with this country has developed and matured. The two countries now cooperate on a wide range of issues, including political consultations on regional and global affairs. Canada maintains excellent relations with Mozambique and considers the country as one of its key partners in Africa.

Mozambique is one of 20 countries of concentration for Canada’s development assistance. In Mozambique, Canada supports the governments fight against poverty, providing particular support in the areas of Health, Education, Agriculture and Governance. As a friend and ally, Canada will continue to partner with the Government of Mozambique and its people to see improvement in the conditions of the people.

There is some modest Canadian investment in the country, with a number of Canadian companies active, particularly in the mining and water sectors, both urban and rural. Mozambique is definitely a country of opportunities, so let our trade section know if you have special interests.

I am returning to Mozambique after an absence of 15 years. It is wonderful to see how Maputo has changed and I am struck by the broad and impressive energy and dynamism of the city. It is heartening to see that despite all of the growth and change, the warmth and generosity of its people remain intact.

I hope you will find the website useful, both in support of your own activities, and to keep up with ours.

Welcome!

Shawn Barber
High Commissioner
